Jan De Rooster was born in Belgium, Heindonk (Antwerpen) on 6 April 1954.
He grew up on his families tea plantation, in the Republic of the Congo (former Belgium Congo) in Rwanda and Belgium.
He emigrated to South Africa at the end of 1968. He currently lives in Pretoria with his wife Linda
Jan studied art at St Lucas Hoger Istituut Voor Beeldende Kunsten in Brussels.
He majored in graphic art with distinction. He also studied part time Stedelyke Academie Voor Schone Kunsten in Leuven Belgium; also with distinction.
